Most dies consist of several basic components, including formwork, shoes, formwork, guide pins, bushings, pads, base plates, screws, dowel pins and keys. Moulds also need strippers, pressure and stretch pads, and equipment to hold them: spools, shoulder bolts, retainers and holders, and gas, coil, or polyurethane springs. Formwork, shoes and formwork
The formwork, shoes and formwork are steel or aluminum plates corresponding to the size of the mold. They serve as the basis for the installation of working mold parts. These parts must be machined, milled or sanded to be parallel and flat within critical tolerances. Although grinding is the most commonly used, grinding surfaces are now as accurate as grinding surfaces.
Most mold bases are made of steel. Aluminum is also a popular mold base material. Aluminum weighs one-third the weight of steel, it can be processed quickly, and special alloys can be added to make it have more compressive strength than mild steel. Aluminium is also a very good impact-absorbing metal and is ideal for punching dies.
The upper and lower die seats are assembled with the guide pins to form a die group. The lower mold holder is usually a hole machined organically or flame cut, allowing the bullets and waste generated in the mold to fall freely on the press through the mold holder. These holes can also be used as clearances for gas springs and other mold parts.
The die thickness depends on the forces expected during the cutting and forming process. For example, a compression die, which compresses metal by pressing metal between the upper and lower die sections, requires a die holder that is much thicker than a simple bending die.
Guide pins and bushings
A guide pin (sometimes called a guide post or guide post) works with a guide bush to precisely align the upper and lower die seats. They are precision ground parts and are usually manufactured within 0.0001 inches. Although many special mounting methods can be used to mount these parts, there are only two basic types of guide pins and bushing friction pins and ball bearing pins.
The friction pin is a precision ground pin slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the guide bush. The pins are made of hardened tool steel, while the bushings are usually made or lined with a special wear-resistant material called aluminum bronze. Aluminum bronze may contain graphite plugs to help reduce pin and bush friction and wear. Friction pins also help to follow the die block, preventing them from moving from side to side.
Precision or ball bearing type guide pins include precision hardened pins, ball cages, ball bearings and bushings. Unlike friction pins, these pins are mounted on a series of ball bearings that are contained in a special aluminum ball cage that allows the bearings to rotate without falling off.
These pins have several advantages. Reduce friction first so the mold can run faster without generating excessive friction and heat. Second, they allow mold makers to easily separate upper and lower mold holders. Third, because they use ball bearings, their manufacturing accuracy is higher than friction pins.
Remember that the purpose of the guide pin is to align the upper and lower die seats, not the poorly maintained or extensive punches in the punch! Some companies try to make up for the pressure of poor maintenance by adding too large guide pins or grinding the ends of the guide pins into a cone. Care must be taken when turning the mold base to prevent the guide pins from bending.
